Pictures In Tiny Boxes is a proposal for a magazine and website, which gives unknown comic/cartoon artists a professional platform to display their work. The designs below are a prototype of how the project would function.
Curation, designs, and layout created by myself.
The bulk of content in this project was used with permission from the following artists:
Sarah Fowlie, Alden K., Nick Hoffman, Björn, Harper Swidnell, Pat Aulisio, Beth Heinly, Sara Peck, Pedro Vargas, Rowan Woodcock, and Mady G.
Mission
The biggest issue in contemporary comix, both in zine production and online work, is they are shrouded in isolation. Part of this is due to the technological advancements in the 21st Century, as well as the immense popularity of traditional Superhero comic properties. Finding alternative comic work in local or online circles is harder and harder to find, and artists in these circles who don't have formal art educations or art careers especially struggle with finding success.
Picture's goal is to further address issues of comic art and identity, as well as to create a space of acceptance in the comics genre, expanding the idea of sequential art as literature. Illustration work can also discuss these issues.
